Dear President Marsilio, dear friends, The Abruzzo Economy Summit is now in its sixth edition and I would like to offer all of you my congratulations, as this initiative has a twofold benefit: it builds connections between the local economic fabric and national and international investors, and makes the best practices that come from this region more widely available.  Over these last years, the Abruzzo Region has regained its solid momentum, creating wealth and jobs for itself and for the whole of Italy. I’m not the one to say so – the figures speak for themselves. From 2022 to 2025, regional GDP grew by 11.8%, almost 5 percentage points more than the national average; unemployment has dropped below the national average, which I believe hadn’t happened for more than thirty years. This success is first and foremost thanks to Abruzzo’s dynamic businesses and workers. In other words, this area can count on excellent industrial districts and high value-added production sectors. I am thinking of the pharmaceutical cluster, for example, which drove regional exports in 2025, making them grow by more than twice the national average; I am also thinking of the strategic aerospace ecosystem and the cybersecurity sector, which has one of its most well-developed hubs in Chieti, thanks to our very own Leonardo; and that is without forgetting advanced research, with Abruzzo playing a unique role on the national scene. Your region is recording solid growth and the Government intends to keep supporting it, through concrete and structural measures, starting with investments in infrastructure, ports and airports. Take, for example, the Pescara-Rome railway line, the Sangro Valley highway or Abruzzo airport, which today counts almost 1.5 million passengers. We are also ensuring stability for measures that have proven highly effective, such as the Single SEZ [Special Economic Zone] for the South, which has enabled industrial sites to be opened in Abruzzo in record time. We also intend to continue doing our best on another front: the development of human capital. Abruzzo ranks first among Italian regions for the number of university students per capita. This is an extraordinary asset, which we must be able to safeguard and help remain in the area. The Government will take on board the input that will emerge from your working sessions, as it is only by listening to those who know and love the area in which they live and work that we can draw up and implement the most effective policies, not only at local level but at national and international level too. Following Eni, IP has also chosen to cap fuel prices throughout Italy. This is an important sign of support for Italian households, confirming that it is possible to tangibly contribute to curbing high fuel costs. I wish to thank the President of Azerbaijan, Ilham Aliyev, for this gesture of attention, which strengthens our cooperation, and the President of SOCAR, Rovshan Najaf.  The Government will continue working to support households and to protect their purchasing power, especially at such a complex time on the international stage. This commendable gesture of attention toward Italy is a step in the hoped-for direction of reducing high fuel costs which, due to the difficult international context, are affecting Italian families. Dopo Eni, anche IP ha scelto di limitare il prezzo dei carburanti su tutto il territorio nazionale. È un segnale importante di attenzione alle famiglie italiane che conferma che è possibile contribuire concretamente a contenere il caro carburanti. Desidero ringraziare per questo il Presidente dell’Azerbaigian, Ilham Aliyev, per il segnale di attenzione che rafforza la nostra cooperazione, e il presidente di Socar, Rovshan Najaf.  Il Governo continuerà a lavorare per sostenere le famiglie e proteggere il loro potere d’acquisto, soprattutto in questa fase internazionale così complessa. A margine dell'Assemblea Generale delle Nazioni Unite a New York, il Ministro degli Affari Esteri Antonio Tajani e l'Amministratore dell'UNDP Alexander De Croo si sono incontrati per sancire un duplice e importante risultato: il rafforzamento del Centro UNDP di Roma e l'avvio del processo di trasferimento nella Capitale italiana delle funzioni di headquarter dell'UNCDF, il Fondo delle Nazioni Unite per lo sviluppo del capitale. L'UNCDF è l'Agenzia ONU che sostiene le Nazioni più fragili attraverso strumenti di finanza innovativa — capitale di rischio, garanzie e strumenti misti pubblico-privati — capaci di mobilitare investimenti laddove i canali di finanziamento tradizionali faticano ad arrivare.  Il risultato è il frutto del lavoro comune portato avanti dalla Struttura di Missione per il Piano Mattei presso la Presidenza del Consiglio dei ministri e dal Ministero degli Affari Esteri e della Cooperazione Internazionale. Un obiettivo che risponde alla strategia delineata dal Presidente del Consiglio Giorgia Meloni nei mesi scorsi: fare di Roma l'hub europeo per gli investimenti in Africa, in sinergia con la Strategia Global Gateway dell'Unione Europea. Il rafforzamento del Centro UNDP e il trasferimento delle funzioni di sede dell'UNCDF a Roma consentiranno, infatti, un ulteriore potenziamento delle attività e delle iniziative e delle collaborazioni già in essere tra UNDP e le diverse Amministrazioni italiane e permetteranno di estendere l'azione anche ai contesti più fragili e alle economie emergenti, a beneficio di uno sviluppo sempre più ampio e condiviso. Il rafforzamento della presenza di UNDP e UNCDF a Roma consolida ulteriormente le collaborazioni a livello internazionale in materia di cooperazione allo svluppo nel quadro del Piano Mattei e rafforza l'architettura della finanza per gli investimenti, ampliandone i portafogli operativi e gli strumenti disponibili. Dear friends, I am very sorry I cannot be with you today in New York, but I wanted to send you my warm greetings and best wishes for this next stage of the initiative launched by Antenna Group and the Atlantic Council to strengthen cooperation between Europe and the Gulf. I believe the situation we face, with the Strait of Hormuz still blocked and a new front of instability at Bab el-Mandeb, makes it clear that Europe and the Gulf have more interests in common than we have traditionally assumed. Our prosperity depends on lasting peace, open trade, secure connections and shared rules, starting with freedom of navigation, without tolls or discriminatory restrictions. This is why we must work ever more closely together, today and in the years ahead. This is a goal the Italian Government has pursued since taking office, marking significant milestones along the way. I am thinking of Italy’s participation as guest of honour at the Gulf Cooperation Council Summit, the Europe Gulf Forum in Costa Navarino, the Future Investment Initiative hosted in Rome last June, and many other opportunities for dialogue and cooperation. I believe the time has come to steer our investments towards a shared goal: making it harder to strike at us and more costly to divide us. Connecting our markets, establishing alternative routes, strengthening infrastructure, and jointly developing technologies and defence capabilities all serve precisely this purpose. This work must begin immediately, even as we seek – with persistence and determination – a lasting solution to the current crisis. I hope this meeting will provide further confirmation that Europe and the Gulf are ready to take greater responsibility for the security, development and well-being of our peoples. You, obviously, can always count on me along this path.
