The President of the Council of Ministers, Giorgia Meloni, had a telephone conversation today with the Crown Prince and Prime Minister of Saudi Arabia, Mohammed bin Salman Al Saud. First of all, President Meloni expressed Italy’s solidarity with Saudi Arabia. The two leaders then discussed the situation in the region and the prospects for reducing tensions and pursuing diplomatic solutions, reiterating the key importance of freedom of navigation through Hormuz and Bab el-Mandeb. The conversation also provided an opportunity to review bilateral relations and the two leaders confirmed their intention to hold the first meeting of the Strategic Partnership Council, in line with the understandings reached during President Meloni’s visit to AlUla last year. Il Presidente del Consiglio, Giorgia Meloni, ha avuto oggi una conversazione telefonica con il Principe Ereditario e Primo Ministro dell’Arabia Saudita, Mohamed bin Salman Al-Saud. Il Presidente Meloni ha prima di tutto voluto esprimere la solidarietà italiana all’Arabia Saudita. I due leader hanno quindi discusso la situazione nella regione, le possibilità di ridurre le tensioni e di perseguire soluzioni diplomatiche, ribadendo la centralità della libertà di navigazione attraverso Hormuz e Bab el-Mandeb.  La conversazione ha permesso anche un esame dei rapporti bilaterali e i due leader hanno confermato la volontà di tenere la prima riunione del Consiglio di Partenariato Strategico, in linea con le intese raggiunte durante la visita del Presidente Meloni ad AlUla lo scorso anno. Minister of Foreign Affairs Antonio Tajani and UNDP Administrator Alexander De Croo met on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly in New York to mark a twofold and significant achievement: strengthening the UNDP Rome Centre and initiating the process to move the headquarters functions of the UNCDF (the UN Capital Development Fund) to the Italian capital. The UNCDF is the UN agency which supports the most vulnerable nations through innovative financial instruments – risk capital, guarantees and mixed public-private instruments – able to mobilise investments where traditional funding channels struggle to reach. This result is thanks to the joint work carried out by the Mattei Plan Task Force at the Presidency of the Council of Ministers and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation – an objective in line with the strategy which President of the Council of Ministers Giorgia Meloni outlined a few months ago: to make Rome a European hub for investment in Africa, in synergy with the European Union’s Global Gateway strategy. A strengthened UNDP Centre and the transfer of UNCDF’s headquarters functions to Rome will, in fact, give a further boost to UNDP’s work, initiatives and existing partnerships with various Italian administrations, enabling activities to also be expanded to the most vulnerable contexts and emerging economies, thereby fostering increasingly widespread and shared development. UNDP and UNCDF’s stronger presence in Rome further consolidates the international development cooperation partnerships under the Mattei Plan and boosts financial architecture for investments, expanding operational portfolios and the instruments on offer. Dear President Marsilio, dear friends, The Abruzzo Economy Summit is now in its sixth edition and I would like to offer all of you my congratulations, as this initiative has a twofold benefit: it builds connections between the local economic fabric and national and international investors, and makes the best practices that come from this region more widely available.  Over these last years, the Abruzzo Region has regained its solid momentum, creating wealth and jobs for itself and for the whole of Italy. I’m not the one to say so – the figures speak for themselves. From 2022 to 2025, regional GDP grew by 11.8%, almost 5 percentage points more than the national average; unemployment has dropped below the national average, which I believe hadn’t happened for more than thirty years. This success is first and foremost thanks to Abruzzo’s dynamic businesses and workers. In other words, this area can count on excellent industrial districts and high value-added production sectors. I am thinking of the pharmaceutical cluster, for example, which drove regional exports in 2025, making them grow by more than twice the national average; I am also thinking of the strategic aerospace ecosystem and the cybersecurity sector, which has one of its most well-developed hubs in Chieti, thanks to our very own Leonardo; and that is without forgetting advanced research, with Abruzzo playing a unique role on the national scene. Your region is recording solid growth and the Government intends to keep supporting it, through concrete and structural measures, starting with investments in infrastructure, ports and airports. Take, for example, the Pescara-Rome railway line, the Sangro Valley highway or Abruzzo airport, which today counts almost 1.5 million passengers. We are also ensuring stability for measures that have proven highly effective, such as the Single SEZ [Special Economic Zone] for the South, which has enabled industrial sites to be opened in Abruzzo in record time. We also intend to continue doing our best on another front: the development of human capital. Abruzzo ranks first among Italian regions for the number of university students per capita. This is an extraordinary asset, which we must be able to safeguard and help remain in the area. The Government will take on board the input that will emerge from your working sessions, as it is only by listening to those who know and love the area in which they live and work that we can draw up and implement the most effective policies, not only at local level but at national and international level too. Following Eni, IP has also chosen to cap fuel prices throughout Italy. This is an important sign of support for Italian households, confirming that it is possible to tangibly contribute to curbing high fuel costs. I wish to thank the President of Azerbaijan, Ilham Aliyev, for this gesture of attention, which strengthens our cooperation, and the President of SOCAR, Rovshan Najaf.  The Government will continue working to support households and to protect their purchasing power, especially at such a complex time on the international stage. Dopo Eni, anche IP ha scelto di limitare il prezzo dei carburanti su tutto il territorio nazionale. È un segnale importante di attenzione alle famiglie italiane che conferma che è possibile contribuire concretamente a contenere il caro carburanti.
